ABC's "The Runner" won't be approaching the finish line anytime soon. The network announced Friday (Oct. 19) that it is putting the new adventure-reality series on hold.

?The Runner? is a reality TV show and live Internet event in which a lone citizen, "the runner," crisscrosses the country, as agents, and potentially the entire American public, attempt to track him down for a potential prize of up to $1 million.

"Unfortunately, it is our view that today?s environment would not be conducive to this type of television event. We have spent a great deal of time and effort developing what we feel is a totally unique and exciting series. It is our hope that circumstances will evolve in such a way that we?ll eventually be comfortable moving forward," says Lloyd Braun, co-chairman of ABC Entertainment Television, referring to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The expensive series, created by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck's Live Planet, Inc., which was slated to premiere on Jan. 7 2002, has been moved to an unspecified time next year.

The network has also experienced problems launching the sequel to another reality series, "The Mole." ABC put "The Mole II: The Next Betrayal" on hiatus earlier this week after the series failed to attract a substantial audience. However, ABC's aren't the only reality series to suffer low ratings since the terrorist attacks. Other shows pulling lower numbers than expected include 'Love Cruise: The Maiden Voyage," " ElimiDate Deluxe," " Amazing Race" and " Lost."
